In Loving Memory of Tired Moms
Well, the other day I was thinking how boring my blogs are--nothing cute or amusing to report like I love to read from the young moms. However, this week I am keeping grandkids, and I am remembering what those "amusing moments" were all about.
We'll start with bedtime last night. (I could back up to the "no bow, no way, Jose" incident getting Katy ready for church, but we'll move along.) After ice cream and finding pajamas for most of them, attempting to find a substitute for Katy's missing bear and Grandpa finally getting them tucked in, we opted for a rousing game of Rummikub. Some time later after we put the game away, Grandpa found Katy just sitting in the den quietly. We have no idea how long she at been there. Grandpa hugged her and asked her what the problem was. TEARS! We finally managed to pry out of her that Molly was sleeping too close to her. No problem. Molly was moved to the utility room.
Grandpa took Katy upstairs again. She then informed Grandpa that she could only sleep after reading a book or someone singing. He opted for the singing. We also needed to check the monitor while Grandpa was upstairs. After several minutes Grandpa informed me that he could hear me quite well although I could hear nothing of him. We brightly concluded that I had switched the base and the monitor and that solved that problem. We fell into bed, quite proud of ourselves.
At about 5:00 am (5:01 to be exact) I hear the very soft whisper of "Grandma." I opened one eye to see two little eyes staring at me at the edge of my mattress. "Grandma, I am thirsty!."
"OK, how about a drink from my bathroom?" TEARS!! "I want a sippie cup with ice cubes!" OK, OK. (I need to note that Katy has been sick and running fever off and on.) I stumble into the closet to find robe and slippers and then can't find Katy. I proceed to the kitchen to arrange a sippie cup with ice cubes, still missing Katy.
Of course, as I work in the kitchen I wake up Molly who begins scratching on the door. At her age she doesn't hold it too well, so I decide I better let her out. The only problem is that our fence has been removed and there is nothing between us and the rest of the world. I spend the next few minutes chasing her in the back yard trying to avoid having to chase her down the alley. (Thank goodness for the presence of mind to put on a robe.) Finally getting Molly contained, I return to the sippie cup with ice cubes. "Katy, Katy--where are you??"
I finally conclude that maybe she has gone back to bed. Bingo. I climb the stairs to deliver her sippie cup with ice cubes as promised. As I handed it to her, I decided I'd better check her temperature with the standard hand to the forehead method. Hmm. I think her fever has come back up, but with my hand of experience I concluded that I didn't think it was over 100 and surely that could wait another hour or two. I fell back in bed at 5:21 having succeeded in getting a drink of water for Katy. No wonder young moms are tired all the time!
Really, we are having a great time. The kids are delightful, and I always enjoy getting to know them better. Elijah reminds me so much of Alan--a tiny little ball of energy.
One more thing--Jill and I made an executive blog decision the other night: You can never post too many pictures!!! With that in mind, I am going to post some of the kids I took yesterday.
Have a great day! I am!!! Love, mom

Thanks, Mom & Dad, for always being willing to venture back into the world of young parenthood to bless your children--and grandchildren! What a wonderful thing it was to have a few days to be a wife and minister without our precious kids! I have to admit the break from parenting was helpful to my spirit. And my kids thoroughly enjoyed their time with you. Every time I say the word "Grandpa" or "Grandma" he giggles. I think that's a good sign!
Meanwhile, sorry Katy woke you! Little rascal! She sounds like a high-maintenance girl! Thanks for being so very generous with her. No wonder she adores you...
